Carbohydrate Counting in the Medical Nutritional Treatment of Diabetes
As diabetes increases in prevalence as one of the most common diseases in (US), the American Diabetes Association (ADA) has highlighted the importance of lifestyle changes, including physical activity and dietary changes. changed general prevention orientations. Dietary modifications constitute the primary therapy, as they have played a key role in the treatment of diabetes in the past years, and can assist in achieving incremental weight loss goals, keeping blood glucose values within guidelines and improving risk factors for secondary cardiovascular complications.
Diabetes Mellitus, with its increasing incidence worldwide, will probably continue to be the most important cause of morbidity and mortality in the future. In the USA, DM is the most common cause of end-stage renal disease, nontraumatic lower extremity amputations, and blindness. People with prediabetes have a very high risk of developing type 2DM and cardiovascular disease if they do not follow preventive lifestyle strategies.
Nutrition education forms the basis of DM treatment. With a successful diabetes nutrition education, the disease can be controlled, and it may be possible for people with DM to live a quality life. In some people with type 2DM, individual nutrition education can be effective alone in preventing the complications that may occur due to diabetes.
Unfortunately, there is no single formula for dietary lifestyle change that we can recommend to all people with diabetes. The main purpose of nutrition education in diabetes is to create a behavioral change related to nutrition and to make it a lifestyle. This is not possible with pre-prepared standard diet papers. Diabetics have to make and implement important decisions about their own lives. Ensuring DM control is extremely important in preventing and delaying macrovascular and microvascular complications that may occur in diabetics. It is the duty of the diabetes team to help diabetics in this regard.

The profession of dietitian, which has a 55-year history in Turkey, has found the value it deserves today and has become a sought-after profession. This development process required the specialization of dietitians working in certain fields, and this specialization was generally realized by the efforts of the individuals. In a chronic disease such as diabetes, it has become inevitable for dietitians to take more responsibility. Diabetes centers and diabetes polyclinics or units in hospitals now need dietitians to spend more time and care for diabetics. Despite the recent opening of Nutrition and Dietetics Departments in many universities and the graduates of many dietitians, due to the insufficient number of dietitians being employed in hospitals, the fact that a small number of dietitians are responsible for the hospital's kitchen, patient services and polyclinics makes it difficult to allocate enough time for diabetics. It also reduces their chances of self-development. However, one of the most important members of the team responsible for the treatment of diabetes is a dietitian.
Dietitians who have graduated from many nutrition and dietetics departments that have been opened in our country in the last ten years may not be able to provide adequate support to diabetics and may need such training, since they cannot receive the same training due to the lack of nutrition and dietetics-based instructors. In particular, the number of dietitians who graduated without learning the "Carbohydrate Counting in the Nutritional Treatment of Diabetics" method, which is an approach related to the amount of carbohydrates consumed, which is the only reason for the increase in blood sugar, is quite high.
With this training, it is aimed that the nutrition and dietetics graduate participants will apply the right treatment in the nutrition of diabetes patients.
